History of Vaihela
The history of Wahekylä’s farm residing on the island of Velkuanmaa goes back to the 1867, when it was bought by Juho Erland Gabrielinpoika. For four generations, Wahekylä’s farm practiced fishing, agriculture and forestry. When in the early 90’s Wahekylä’s barn was still inhabited by a cattle herd of 50, the farm’s owners at the time, Katariina and Matti Vaihela, decided to broaden their horizon by expanding into travel and tourism. Two cabins for rent and and Sunday-buffets quickly welcomed the farm into the traveling business, and the farm’s current owners, Mirja and Janne Sievänen, have truly made the place blossom.
The farm’s main house has seen and experienced many changes in the past 150 years, but the main house’s appearance and charm has stayed the same. In the late 90’s, a stunning and atmospheric wine cellar was added, holding up to 4000 bottles of wine. Above it was built the Restaurant Korkki, as well as a sauna for guests to reserve. The archipelago Hotel Halssi and its restaurant were completed at the turn of the millennium, completing Vaihela as the full-service travel destination in the heart of the archipelago as it now is known for.
